AROME – Augmented Reality for Operations and Maintenance of Equipment

ITT has developed a system to facilitate training of personnel in the operation and maintenance of equipment. Operators can carry a mobile AR system that will display operations and maintenance instructions on top of the actual equipment to be operated or maintained thereby providing a more intuitive and direct teaching mechanism. A single Augmented Reality (AR) system can be used to indicate the procedures for maintenance and operation for many pieces of equipment with low cost to add new equipment. This device eliminates the need to go back and forth between reference manuals and the equipment. ITT is considering using this system for complex ITT products being sold to the DoD. Some characteristics of this capability are:

·         Maintenance and operation instruction directly overlaid on the actual equipment

·         System is insensitive to presence of noise, metal, or varying illumination

·         A single system can be used with many machines

·         Extensible to additional equipment for very low cost

·         System can be added to existing equipment

·         Hands free operation
